The never ending tale of Draupadi: An all women play draws parallels between the Pandava Queen and women of today

  • Written and directed by Atul Satya Kaushik under the presentation of The Films and Theatre Society, the play performed at Kamani Auditorium
  • A musical presentation, the play has an all women cast and is set in a village of Haryana, the state notorious for having one of the lowest sex ratios in India

IMG_7739 IMG_7741 IMG_7742 IMG_7748 IMG_7754 IMG_7812 IMG_7813 IMG_7818 IMG_7821 IMG_7823 IMG_7830 IMG_7833

New Delhi: She was a queen, wife to no less than the mighty Pandavas; yet she was a woman in a patriarchal society who held little sway over her own fate. ‘Draupadi’ might have lived in another era, but the fate she endured continues to befall numerous women in India and across the world even today.

A presentation of The Films and Theater Society, Draupadi, a widely acclaimed play written and directed by contemporary writer Atul Satya Kaushik was performed at the Kamani Auditorium at a special staging this evening.

Based in a Haryana village in 1960, ‘Draupadi’ is an imaginative re-telling of certain chapters of Draupadi’a life that juxtaposes the life of the Pandava queen in a contemporary setting, drawing parallels between her and the women of today.

With the men of this large family of Haryanvi rural performers gone out to attend a wedding feast, the women of the household decide to use the opportunity to re-enact an old play that was ‘banned’ by the male patriarchs who thought it would corrupt the minds of women.

Performing the play, the women take up the roles of all characters including men and reprise the tragedies of their own lives. In the process they discover how closely their lives are a reflection of Draupadi’s life. This intense story unfolds in an incredibly light and seamless way and makes the production a literary marvel presented in a visually delightful manner. Like all other productions of the society this play is also high on folk music.

It was an out and out musical play with many songs of different styles such as Ragini, Qawwali, Ghazal, Heer etc; and tired to narrate a serious issue in a light way. The seriousness, however, is not lost and the play becomes a powerful commentary on the need of women emancipation.

By bringing today’s generation closer to mythology in a new and interesting way, the play makes them draw important meanings from it. Be it Draupadi’s failure to find the love of the man she chose, her objectification in the gamble played by Yudhishtir or her public humiliation – the village women manage to find parallels for each of these tragedies amidst their own lives.

In the end the women draw the conclusion that centuries might have elapsed, nothing seems to have changed as far as their fate women is concerned.

“Draupadi is not just a mythical character, she’s a metaphor for women of all times and ages. There is no dearth of Draupadis in our world; they are everywhere – be it in the villages of Haryana, in the thriving metropolitan of Delhi, in the slums of Mumbai, on the streets of Ahmedabad or in a village of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwah. This play talks about the helplessness of being a woman in a male dominated world which most of the women must have felt even today,” says Shri Kaushik.

The play is garnished with light hearted jokes and one-liners peculiar of Haryanvi life-style and hummable and rustic Haryanvi Ragnees.

The play was first performed at the Sri Ram Centre, Mandi House on 28th July 2013; and has since then been staged at the L.T.G. Auditorium, Delhi; Central Park, Connought Place, New Delhi as well as M C Ghiya Hall, Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, Mumbai. It was staged recently for the first time in Gurgaon where it left a lasting impact on the audience.

nbalogo-Thomas to Visit Schools and Community Organizations and Conduct Youth Clinics in Mumbai and Chennai-

-Thomas Will Provide Finals Analysis for Sony SIX and be the First NBA Player to Conduct a Google Hangout in India-

NEW YORK AND MUMBAI, June 5, 2014 – National Basketball Association (NBA) point guard Isaiah Thomas of the Sacramento Kings will travel to Mumbai this week for a weeklong promotional tour to grow the game of basketball and the NBA’s fanbase in the country.

Making his first trip to India, Thomas will travel across Mumbai and Chennai, participating in a wide range of activities, coaching children and interacting with local celebrities.

Thomas, a 5’9” guard from the University of Washington, was the 60th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. In the 2013-14 regular season, he set career highs in minutes per game (34.7), points per game (20.3), assists per game (6.3), steals per game (1.3) and field goal percentage (45.3%).  He finished 11th in the Kia NBA Most Improved Player Award voting. On Jan. 19, he scored a career-high 38 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder.  Five days later, he tied this total against the Indiana Pacers.  On March 18, he recorded his first career triple-double with 24 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in a 117-111 overtime win over the Washington Wizards.

Thomas marks the 31st NBA or WNBA player or legend to travel to India since 2006 to help grow the game following All-Stars such as Chris Bosh, Pau Gasol, and Dwight Howard.

“I’m honored to be representing the Kings and the entire NBA in India this offseason and will do whatever I can to help grow the game here by inspiring children,” said Thomas.

The Kings are owned by Vivek Ranadivé, the first NBA owner from India, and have a rapidly growing fanbase in the Indian and Asian markets.  During the past season, more than 20 Kings games were broadcast on Sony SIX, including a live broadcast of the Kings opening night.  The Kings were also the first team to launch a dedicated Hindi website ( www.kings.com/hindi ).

“We are extremely excited to have a member of the Sacramento Kings visit India this summer, and Isaiah’s passion for the game and the community makes him a great ambassador for the sport in India,” said Ranadivé. “One of the key aspects of my NBA 3.0 vision is deepening the global imprint of basketball and India is a prime example of this. Basketball is rapidly becoming one of India’s most popular sports, second only to cricket, and interest in the game is expanding every day. I also have no doubt that India will one day become a hotbed of NBA-caliber talent.”

During his stay in India, Thomas will conduct several basketball clinics at schools and community organizations across Mumbai and Chennai.  He will provide in-depth Finals analysis for fans in India on Sony SIX. On June 7, Thomas will conduct the first-ever Google hangout to promote the official NBA online store in India, NBAStore.in. A few lucky fans will be selected to interact with Isaiah and showcase NBA merchandise.

“Isaiah’s visit to India coincides with The Finals, an important opportunity to grow the NBA’s fanbase in India,” said Yannick Colaco, Managing Director of NBA India. “Thank you to Isaiah for visiting Mumbai and for inspiring Indian youth to play basketball.”

He will also be on-hand to tip off the first stage of the Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA’s Basketball Hoops Infrastructure project.  Reliance Foundation and NBA India have partnered to install basketball hoops at schools across Mumbai.  IES School in Dadar is the first school to receive the new equipment.  Thomas will conduct clinics for students at the IES School in Dadar and at a local government school in Chennai.

Thomas will be joined by celebrity VJ and television star Rannvijay Sing, who will train with Thomas, learn what it takes to be a professional basketball player, and show him the best food Mumbai has to offer.

The NBA opened its first office in Mumbai in 2011 and is committed to growing basketball in India.  The league has hosted more than 500 events in 10 cities since 2008.  The league has marketing partnerships in India with adidas, Coca-Cola, Nike, Reebok and Spalding, and has NBA merchandise widely available in 225 adidas locations and the newly launched NBAStore.in.  A record 14 games aired per week this season on Sony SIX, up from three during the 2012-13 season.

Look 20 at 40 with Restylane Skinboosters: Dr Abhay Talati, Dermatologist, Skin Space, Mumbai

Some say that age is just a number; others like to believe that it is just a state of mind. However, when age starts catching up and lines and wrinkles start marring your once flawless face, one is bound to miss their younger years.

In an age when women play multifarious roles and responsibilities, the stress is also on the rise. Neither is there time to follow elaborate beauty rituals that keep your skin looking young and plump for a long time. Dullness of the skin, wrinkles, pigmentation, drooping necklines, can often force you look away from the mirror.

 Image- 20 at 40

From times immemorial, the quest for the ultimate elixir of youth is on and people try many different mechanisms and therapies to keep looking younger. However, with radical modern advancements in the field of skincare and beauty that target the ‘science’ behind ageing, it possible to keep looking younger even when the age is on the advance. And what more! The modern day procedures do not even require elaborate rituals and have limited downtime.

With Restylane Vital Skinboosters you can again be the awesome lady that you always have been. All you need is to understand that these signs of ageing aren’t a big deal anymore and you can get rid of each of them, if you trust the new-age skincare offerings. With no time at hand and an obvious aversion to surgical methods, procedures like fillers and Skinboosters are a dream come true for many ladies, who choose to be ahead in times.

Restylane Vital Skinboosters are Hyaluronic Acid based fillers that work on a natural principle that hydration is one of the prime requirements of a healthy skin. HA is actually a natural substance present in the layers of the skin which along with collagen and elastin is responsible for keeping the flexibility and volume of the skin intact. As we age, HA starts depleting from the skin and this is one of the reasons why lines and wrinkles start appearing on the skin.

When injected into the upper layers of the skin, the filler takes away the fine lines and wrinkles and make you look plumper and younger; HA being a hydrophilic substance also attracts water and encourages the skin to retain moisture. It also helps fill up the fine lines that appear with age. The glow that comes with it is natural. So, why spending hours worrying about the signs of ageing, go for Restylane Vital Skinbooster sessions and you will fall in love with your age.

These Skinboosters work on holistic beauty and benefit the skin with deep hydration while they also subtly address specific issues like acne-scarring in some women. With each session as per the client’s requirements, these Skinboosters deliver deep skin hydration for proven and sustained improvements in overall skin quality. And, there is nothing that would work against your skin-type, if it is tried under expert dermatologist’s supervision and guidance.

A session can last less than 30 minutes and its affects stay for a good six months or so.

When administered in the lips and around the mouth, Restylane fillers will reduce the appearance of marionette lines or the smile lines that emerge on your face when you laugh, giving you a younger appearance. Eyes are the area which if not taken care of will quickly belie your age. The dark circles, the hollows under the eyes and the wrinkles around the eyes are all tell tale signs of ageing. When administered under the eyes, they will fill up the dark hollows that give you a tired, weary and aged appearance. Restylane skinboosters can also work well on the fine lines around the eyes.

Restylane fillers can also replenish the lost volume from your cheeks and lips and make them look plump and young yet again.

Then you have your hands which are the biggest give away of age. Even when your face looks young and fine, your hands which get wrinkly and dehydrated earlier can reveal your true age. Here again Restylane Vital can come to your rescue. When administered on the hands, where the skin is markedly thin, Vital will have a replenishing effect – it will provide much needed hydration to the skin and also give some volume to make the hands looking beautiful again.

So, if you too believe that age is just a number, let it remain so. Do not let age mar your looks.

Travelling is perhaps one of the few expenditures that make you richer. It is blissful to gaze at the beauty of the hills or the serenity of the rivers or just lay down by the sea side to soak in the sun. But, as you enrich your experiences travelling around, you may often experience some health related issues like dehydration, fatigue, infection, nausea, jet lags. While we deal with such issue with a medical response, we often ignore the negative effects of travelling on our skin. Days of moving around in the wilderness may often leave your skin dehydrated, dull, and sun scorched. The fatigue and lack of nutrition may also leave you with hollow eyes. Acne scars are another beauty related woe that many travelers face as they fight infections and breakouts.

Just back from a long travel trip? Here are some tips to fix your beauty problems:

1.     Dull and Dry Skin: From weathering the cold winds of the mountains to bearing the brunt of the scorching sea side sun, your skin may lose a lot of hydration and may appear rugged, dull, dry and flaky after a long sojourn. Use plenty of moisturizer to deal with the dehydration and drink a lot of water. Visit a dermatologist and get a quick procedure done with Restylane Vital Skinboosters – hyaluronic acid based gels that replenish the skin, promote water retention, gives it hydration and glow.

2.     Coarse Hair: The weather changes, winds and sun exposure can be equally damaging for your hair. The change of water may not also not suit your hair and they may end up being dry and coarse. Once back from the travel trip, get a deep hydrating hair massage for your scalp, and apply conditioning agents like egg or henna on your hair to help them overcome the trauma. Use a mild shampoo and oil regularly for a few days.

3.     Dark Circles and hollow eyes: Though travelling is fun, it often leaves you fatigues because you lose sleep to take in as much fun and often skip proper meals leaving you nutrition starved. Dark circles are a direct result of it. Once back, have enough sleep, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, and drink plenty of water. A procedure with Restylane fillers can also fill up the hollows that are giving you a zombie like appearance. The effects last for up to a year.

4.     Acne: Skin is a very sensitive sensory organ and we tend to touch our face again and again during travel that too without realizing that our hands may be dirty. Even a little dust is enough to cause pimples. So always wash your hands and if that is not possible carry a sanitizer so that your hands are clean and no bacteria are transferred from your hands to face. If you are having breakouts, speak to a doctor as it may necessitate treatment with antibiotics. Use a non-comedogenic lotion that will not clog your pores. If you are saddled with acne scars, Restylane can help fill up the crevices on skin and reduce the appearance of scars.

5.     Dry Feet: The best solution for your feet is applying coconut oil on them before sleeping. It will keep them moisturized overnight and make them soft and supple again.

6.    Puffy Eyes: Eyes need special care and attention so get proper sleep, drink lots of water and eat cucumber. You can also use cucumber to soothe your eyes.

A Perspective On Illegal Buildings In Mumbai: Anuj Puri, Chairman & Country Head, JLL India

$
0
0

anuj puriThe problem of illegal buildings in Mumbai – and their impact on the existence of Mumbai’s citizens and organizations, as well as its real estate market – is not a recent phenomenon. In fact, it is as old as the BMC itself. Whether they were the result of corruption and collusion or lack of vigilance of, the issue has always persisted in what is India’s financial capital, which is also the country’s most space-challenged city.

However, the issue of illegal buildings started intensifying from 1995 onward. This was when the BMC introduced a slew of new regulations pertaining to development control, FSI and TDR. What followed was a significant increase in violations such as consumption of excessive FSI, building being built higher than permitted, flouting of CRZ and air space regulations, and projects being built without environmental clearances. Yet another common violation is the illegal utilization of open spaces that must mandatorily be maintained around buildings.

Considering that the problem of illegal construction is rampant throughout Greater Mumbai as well as the Kalyan-Dombivali belt, Thane and Ulhasnagar, it is impossible to define a focal point of highest incidence. What is certain is that the problem has been more or less been kept under control in Navi Mumbai, where CIDCO enforced strict norms on such matters. The rest of the city seems to have been, and continues to be, wide open to the rampant spread of illegal constructions.

The fallout of illegal buildings or constructions on the city is severe. In the first place, residents of such buildings face the constant risk of traumatic life disruption and displacement, as such buildings are liable to be identified and illegal and consequently demolished without much notice. Also, since illegal additional constructions are not part of the original approved building plans, the entire project is effectively rendered structurally unsound.

Because of huge shortage of FSI within Mumbai and its surroundings, illegal constructions are on an inexorable increase. When development clearances and increased FSI are not available, areas which are defined by huge demand for built-up spaces and no supply of new land parcels, illegal buildings are and will always be an unfortunate but logical consequence.

Also, property prices in buildings tend to be lower in illegally constructed buildings. In a city like Mumbai, where astronomically high property prices represent the greatest rift between people and homes, this factor plays a significant role in maintaining demand for any kind of available space.

A  building’s overall legality can be verified by the availability of an occupation certificate and original drawings approved by the BMC. However, it is beyond a layperson’s capacity to verify whether the offered space lies within the approved part of a project or is an illegal extension.

Mumbai is not alone when it comes to the plague of illegal structures – most other Indian cities have their share of the problem as well. The notable exceptions are cities where development rules are more flexible and practical, or are enforced with greater strictness. Some of these cities are New Delhi, Hyderabad, Chandigarh and Bangalore.  Ahmedabad, which earlier had major issues with FSI violations, clamped down seriously after the earthquake in 1991 and completely overhauled its regulation process. As a result, the incidence of illegal construction in Ahmedabad has reduced considerably.

Aditi Shrivastava, Head-Intellecap Impact Investment Network, said, “Currently only 5 of our 50 angel investors are women – this number needs to increase! Entrepreneurs Gayathri Vasudevan of LabourNet and Jose Peter of Arogya Finance gave the audience a close look into how impact businesses operate.

Questions from the audience revolved around the understanding the trade-off between financial and social returns, size of investment, time commitment required, and measurement of impact. The event was held at the U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai. Raj Wadhwani, the Consul for Political and Economic Affairs at the Consulate concluded, “The United States Government is committed to increasing women’s economic power across South Asia. Here in India’s financial hub, it is particularly salient to focus on women’s leadership in business and participation in the economy. We’re pleased to co-host this event, which has fostered an excellent discussion. ”

Following the event, a few of the attendees have already signed up to mentor and invest through Intellecap’s angel network platform. Seeing the enthusiastic turnout, Intellecap and FemPower plan to hold another similar event around September 2014.
