MUMBAI, July 21, 2014 – Legendary cricket star and Laureus Academy member, Steve Waugh was in Mumbai today to visit the Magic Bus project– a strategic partner of the Laureus Sports for Good Foundation.

Magic Bus, an Indian NGO working with underprivileged children to make sure they move out of poverty. Magic Bus has received funding from Laureus since its inauguration and has been a strategic partner of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation for five years. Magic Bus currently operates in 19 states around India impacting over 250,000 young people with the ambition of reaching 1 million participants by 2017.

The great success achieved by Magic Bus has been recognised at the last 2014 Laureus World Sports Awards with the presentation of the Laureus Sport for Good Award.

Steve Waugh along with Magic Bus founder Matthew Spacie unveiled the Laureus Pavillion at the Magic Bus Centre for Learning and Development located in Village Aasrewadi near Karjat.

This was followed by a visit to the Bombay Port Trust (BPT) community project where Steve Waugh met and interacted with the students and members of the local community.

Speaking on the occasion, Steve Waugh said, “As a representative of the Laureus Academy, it gives me a great sense of pride to be associated with Magic Bus. The work they are doing for young children is actually realising our vision of using sports to lead change and enhance their quality of life. I am humbled by visiting the project sites and would like to offer my heartiest congratulations to Mathew and his team for doing such a great job.

Matthew Spacie, Founder of Magic Bus added, “Magic Bus’ work has grown to 18 States of India in the last fifteen years, covering 250,000 children and 8000 young people from marginalised communities. This would not have bene possible without supporters like Laureus and we want to thank Laureus and Steve for this strong support.”

Magic Bus, founded by Englishman Matthew Spacie and based in Mumbai, aims to take children out of poverty through a programme of mentoring and coaching. Since 2001, the Magic Bus programme has grown to embrace over 250,000 children in 18 states each week and Spacie’s ambition now is to reach out to one million children by 2017.

 

About the Laureus Pavilion

The Laureus Pavilion is a covered activity area that Magic Bus has built inside its 25-acre learning center campus. The center itself is an outdoor learning and development space that provides facilitated experiences in a wide variety of activities ranging from rope climbing to cycling and much more.

“The Pavilion helps Magic Bus deliver activities during the Summer and Monsoon seasons, enabling participants to continue accessing sports activities.” says Rob Thomas, Head of the centre. “It can accommodate people of different ages and abilities and provides the perfect living space for group activities.”

The Laureus Pavilion was built by premier architectural firm Architect Brio, who describe the Pavilion as “…Partly a building, partly a challenge course, the Laureus sponsored Learning Pavilion, located at the Magic Bus Centre for Experiential Learning, is an interactive building used as a gathering space and play area for underprivileged children while they are on their weekend camps.”

About the BPT Community

Magic Bus has also been the longest running NGO working with the BPT community since 2003. They are primarily running sports sessions here for the underprivileged children from the local schools. Their voluntary activities have improved health awareness, increased participation from girls and increased attendance at school among other impact led results.

Laureus is a universal movement that celebrates the power of sport to bring people together as a force for good.  Laureus is composed of three core elements – the Laureus World Sports Academy, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and the Laureus World Sports Awards – which collectively celebrate sporting excellence and use sport as the means to promote social change.

The first Patron of Laureus was Nelson Mandela.  At the inaugural Laureus World Sports Awards in 2000, he said: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair.” This has become the philosophy of Laureus; the driving force behind its work.

The Laureus Academy Members volunteer their services as global ambassadors for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, which was set up to promote the use of sport as a tool for social change. The Foundation addresses social challenges through a worldwide programme of sports related community development initiatives. Since its inception, Laureus has raised over €60 million for projects which have helped to improve the lives of millions of young people. The mission of the Laureus Foundation is to use sport as the means to combat some of the world’s toughest social challenges facing young people today such as juvenile crime, gangs, HIV/AIDS, discrimination, social exclusion, landmines awareness and health problems like obesity.

The Laureus World Sports Awards is the premier global sports awards honouring the greatest sportsmen and women across all sports each year.  The winners are selected by the ultimate sports jury – the 47 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, the living legends of sport honouring the great athletes of today.  The Awards are presented at an annual Awards Ceremony, attended by global figures from sport and entertainment, which is broadcast to 120 countries and territories.

Proceeds from the Laureus World Sports Awards directly benefit and underpin the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation which supports over 150 community sports projects around the world.  The 2014 Laureus World Sports Awards were held in Kuala Lumpur on March 26.

The first ever Myntra Fashion Weekend was hosted at Palladium Hotel in Mumbai where stars from bollywood showed their fashion and style.

The finale of the three-day event had both fashion enthusiasts and Bollywood buffs at the edge of their seats in anticipation for cinema heartthrob Hrithik Roshan’s newly launched brand HRX. Hrithik Roshan walked the ramp on the last day of the event where he was an absolute delight to watch in a brown pants matching his side-curled hairstyle, and paired it up with white t shirt and black overcoat with a cross necklace and some bands on his hand. The leather shoes only completed his look.

The Fashion show audience witnessed an energetic and grand performance by bollywood renowned choreographer Sandip Soparrkar’s troupes. The dancers brought on ramp dynamic award winning moves which were inspired by Hrithik Roshan film “Kites”. Sandip Soparrkar had choreographed Hrithik in the famous song “fire” from Kites film. The dance choreography was breadth taking as they presented dance on the ramp and introducing it as fashion.

Sandip Soparrkar on his facebook page posted “glad I worked with Hrithik again, he launched his new clothing brand HRX and I am happy to recreate his moves from our song Fire from the film Kites.”

Hrithik Roshan who was very impressed with the moves and appreciated the work put in by Sandip and his team. The show had everything for which Hrithik’s wildly applauding fans love him. The zest and energy in the room was so high that the show area was over flowing with people shouting and cheering for Hrithik.

Delhi, 8 Jan, 2015: FIITJEE, the country’s premier institute for IIT-JEE training, will conduct a nation-wide examination on February 8 to select 40 underprivileged but highly meritorious students who will be groomed and tutored for free by the institution for entrance to India’s most reputed engineering colleges.

 

The “FORTUNATE 40” examination will be held across designated test centres in India for all students studying in class VIII and X, who aspire to make it to IIT-JEE in the year 2019 & 2017 respectively, but do not have the financial resources to afford an effective coaching institution.

 

The selected 40, who show potential for doing well in the field, will be taken under the wing of FIITJEE, an organization which sends a large number of students to IITs and other prestigious engineering colleges of India every year.

 

While students from a cross section of society aspire to make it to the IITs, it is not an easy exercise. Having the intellectual capability and potential is not enough as cracking JEE also requires a rigorous training and guidance. Students from economically less fortunate backgrounds often fail to avail the benefits of such coaching programmes.

 

Keeping in mind the aspirations of such students, FIITJEE being a social responsibility-conscious organization, designed the FORTUNATE 40 programme in 2008. It’s a program exclusively created to provide world-class training to serious students from financially weaker backgrounds and enthuse them to achieve their goal of success & top ranks in IIT-JEE and other competitive exams.

Tourism Toronto hosts thanksgiving dinner in Mumbai

tourismtorontoMumbai 09th January 2015: In its endeavor to promoteToronto as a preferred MICE destination, Tourism Toronto recently hosted an exclusive VIP invitee thanksgiving dinner for its travel trade partners & select corporate companies in Mumbai. The objective of this event was to get them all together for a fun filled evening as well as garner further interest for Toronto as a MICE destination along with its wide offerings and various attractions.

 

The function was attended by close to 70 travel trade partners and corporate firms specifically handling India’s MICE traffic. Tourism Toronto provided information on various attractions including the newly introduced Edge Walk at the CN Tower, various Indian restaurants, venues for seminars and meetings, shopping centers, premium lodging options and heritage locations that feature in the city.

The dinner was a huge success with a custom themed décor using the Canadian colors, effective networking and very positive feedback from the attendees.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Sudarshana Kar, Account Manager, Tourism Toronto, said, “The thanksgiving dinner provided a wonderful opportunity to bring everyone together who have contributed in building the brand in India. INTELECT, the three-day conference and exposition on the efficient consumption of electricity, cohosted by IEEE and Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers’ Association (IEEMA), was inaugurated today in Mumbai by Shri Anant Geethe, Union Minister for Heavy Industry & Commerce, Government of India, Shri Tanga Byaling Chairman, North Eastern Regional Power Committee, Minister for Home, Power & Non-Conventional Source of Energy, Government of Arunachal Pradesh and Shri. Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Minister for Energy, New & Renewable Energy, Government of Maharashtra. ‘Ghazalaw’ to perform at Ghazal Bahaar in Mumbai

Mumbai, 29 January 2015

 

Celebrating the affinity between the Indian Ghazal and the Welsh folk tradition, Mumbai singer Tauseef Akhtar and Welsh singer-songwriter Gwyneth Glyn will weave the love poetry of their two ancient traditions together to the accompaniment of harp, tabla, guitar and harmonium as ‘Ghazalaw’ a unique and exquisite collaboration. The group are set to perform at the popular Ghazal Bahaar Festival in Mumbai at Rangsharda on 31 January 2015. The proceeds of the Festival will be donated to SBMS Vriddh Anand Ashram, Akurdi a home for the aged in Pune.

 

Tauseef Akhtar and Gwyneth Glyn came together to explore their musical affinity with support from Wales Arts International in 2012. Over six days in the Roundhouse, St Hilary, ‘Ghazalaw’ was born. Welsh harpist Georgia Ruth joined the duo in Mumbai to develop the songs further with musicians Ashish Jha, (tabla),  Manas Kumar(violin),  and Sanjoy Das(guitar). Ghazalaw has performed in Mumbai, at the Desert Festival, Delhi and featured at the Indiearth Exchange in Chennai. With support from the Arts Council of Wales and generous sponsorship from Air India, the musicians returned to the Round House in January 2013 to record their eponymously-titled debut album ‘Ghazalaw’.

Sharon Memis, Director West India, British Council says “Our Folk Nations project focuses on music as the vehicle for cultural exchange, and aims to connect India and the UK to the other’s contemporary folk music. Having emerged from a creative collaboration between musicians from Wales and from India, the wonderful ensemble of Ghazalaw returns to perform in Mumbai. A unique treat for music lovers, an event not to be missed”.

 

At first glance, India and Wales seem to be distant relations, but as you dig deeper, both the Welsh folk and Indian Ghazal traditions evolve from ancient poetic forms that share surprising affinities. There is a strong historic linguistic link, as both the Welsh language and the language of the Ghazal (sung in Ghazalaw in Urdu) both evolved from sanskrit and a common Indo-European language. The parallels with the Welsh linguistic and cultural heritage are striking, as are the voices of Tauseef and Gwyneth which seamlessly weave music, songs and poetry fused from both worlds.

 

The group is excited to perform at the Festival. Singer Tauseef Akhtar says ‘The Ghazal audience has whole heartedly welcomed Ghazalaw especially because of the blend of Welsh Folk. Gwyneth Glyn is a treat for listeners. Her ability to understand and express the nuances of Ghazal through Welsh folk is phenomenal. Georgia Ruth Williams adds more beauty to the whole experience through her silky voice and mesmerizing harp.”

The group will also be the opening act at the Kolkata Book Fair, which focuses on UK as this year’s theme. ‘I am excited to be returning to India to perform with Ghazalaw, especially at two such prestigious events. I can’t wait to share our unique blend of Welsh folk music and ghazal singing with lovers of poetry at the Kolkata Book Fair. It will also be a true honour to take part in Ghazal Bahaar, Mumbai, alongside many of the greatest names in Ghazal singing.’ says Gwyneth.

BlackSoil Realty to invest INR 26 crore in a luxurious residential project at Tardeo, Mumbai

blacksoilMumbai, February 16, 2015: BlackSoil Realty Fund has announced that it has entered into an agreement to invest in a prime residential project in Tardeo, Mumbai, for INR 26 crore through quasi-equity route. The luxurious project being a Joint Venture undertaken by Gala & Goshar Group, is expected to commence this year and is scheduled to be completed by 2018. This project would be BlackSoil’s second investment after its maiden investment with the city-based Sheth Developers worth INR 30 crore in August 2014.

BlackSoil Realty Fund – I is a SEBI registered Category II AIF fund which has recently done its closing at INR 131 crores and plans to invest the residual amount within the next 12-18 months. The Fund is promoted by Mr. Shashi Kiran Shetty, CMD of Allcargo Logistics, Mr. Gnanesh Gala, Managing Director of Navneet Education Ltd, and renowned Mumbai based realty expert, Mr. Virendra Gala.

 “Gala & Goshar Group have a good track record for delivering projects with unmatched efficiencies and uncompromising quality. The project will enhance the sophisticated and first-class living experience with attractive architecture, spacious and lavish apartments, and desirable amenities all tailored to attract both Business and Upper middle class community in Tardeo,” says Mr. Shetty of Allcargo Logistics.

“Currently there is no new supply of luxurious projects in Tardeo area, so the said project shall become an attraction of being one of the finest Residency in one of the most arterial area of Mumbai,” says Mr. Mohinder Pal Bansal, Managing Partner of BlackSoil Realty Investment Advisors. “Also from the structure perspective this is our first investment in LLP, which is still a new investment vehicle for private equity funds,” he added.

Mumbai, February 24, 2015: A two-day CSR session titled ‘Social Impact Measurement Workshop’ at Wockhardt Towers was a platform for CSR experts to discuss on the social impact measurement tool viz: SROI. The workshop aimed to generate enhanced understanding among companies, social enterprises and non-profit organizations looking for practical ways to start measuring the social impact of their society and community programs. International CSR expert, Monaem Ben Lellahom, Co-founder and Head of Enterprise Sustainability Consultancy Services at Sustainable Square Consultancy and Think Tank, a regional Dubai addressed the attendees at the session.

Together the expert members discussed on the measurements tools best suited for social impact of CSR programmes. Among the attendees were eminent organizations such as Indian Centre for CSR, HDFC Life, MET Institute of Management and Arpan among others. Sharing the impact of some very well received programmes of Wockhardt Foundation was Dr Huzaifa Khorakiwala. He said, “Many institutes and organizations are doing a lot of good work for the society. This initiative offers a platform to experts in CSR to come together and address challenges in programme execution. This time, the discussion was on social impact measurement of which it is imperative to measure the tangible and intangible impact of every programme.”
